During national Recycle Week (17 – 23 October), we’re calling for local people to donate and “recycle” their unwanted items of furniture.

Each year, our Stoke-on-Trent based charity ensures that around 6,700 pieces of furniture are saved from the rubbish tip, together worth more than £120,000 a year, including wardrobes, beds and three-piece suites.

Instead, we offer a free collection service for large items in good condition. The collected goods are then sold in our specialist second-hand Furniture & Home Charity Warehouse shop in Hanley as well as our Emmaus shop in the Potteries Centre.

Funds raised at both stores help Emmaus North Staffs continue tackling furniture poverty in the local area. Each year, our charity partners with local councils and housing associations to offer free items to over 800 households without access to essential furniture and appliances.

Speaking about the plea, our Executive Lead John Webbe said: “We’re asking people to take a look around their house, shed, loft or garage – if they have any quality furniture they don’t need, they can call us to book a free collection from their home. We’re proud to think that by offering this service, we’re doing our bit to encourage people to think more about recycling and helping the environment. It’s a great alternative to having to take your unwanted furniture to the tip.

“The recent cost of living crisis means that sadly Emmaus is needed now more than ever, and everything sold in our shops will raise money to help us support more people experiencing poverty in our local area.”

Emmaus North Staffs is also working on plans to establish a community for people in North Staffordshire who have experienced homelessness. This accommodation will offer a home, work experience, daily support and funded training to rebuild lives, and will be the first of its kind in the county.

The Emmaus collection service for furniture in re-sellable condition is available to homes and businesses within a 10 mile radius of the Emmaus Furniture & Home Charity Warehouse on Josiah Wedgwood St in Hanley (ST1 5NT).
