We run the largest furniture and household charity shop in North Staffordshire, supporting local people to move away from poverty to create a sustainable future.

Reuse & Recycling

We need to undertake a lot of collections and deliveries every week to service the enterprise.  We do around 150 collections and deliveries every single week across the area, mainly focused on the three local authorities of Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme and Staffordshire Moorlands, but we also do the odd job in South Cheshire or northern half of Stafford Borough.

We collect around 300 tonnes of furniture, household items and white goods every year, a large percentage of which could have ended up in landfill had we not collected it. Much of this 300 tonnes is delivered back out again to properties across the local community.

Our aim is to increase our overall recycling rates to minimise our own impact on landfill rates so watch this space for updates.

Whilst many local charities have charity shops with furniture, no other local charity operates a ‘referrals’ system for local housing partners to refer their tenants to us for the core essential items of furniture and white goods when setting up a new home. We process over 800 referrals for individuals and families every year, supplying several thousand items of furniture and white goods to local people at no cost to the tenants themselves apart from a small delivery fee.

Our plans

  • Solidarity: the Emmaus movement across the world is built on the ethos of ‘solidarity’: supporting the most vulnerable in society, to work together for a better tomorrow.
  • Community development: there are 34 Emmaus charities in the UK with 29 of these having a ‘community’. This is a mixed residential and enterprise model where companions (mainly formerly homeless people) live and work together in the Emmaus charity in a sharing, supportive environment.
