We’re calling on local people to ditch Black Friday and instead join others across the country to support the more sustainable and affordable, Buy Nothing New Day, also being held on 24 November.

As well as selling quality second-hand furniture and household items, our Furniture & Home Charity Warehouse on Josiah Wedgwood Street off Etruria Road, Hanley, sells brand new divan beds, mattresses and white goods.

So, if you’re looking for a new washing machine, fridge or bed and were thinking of rushing out to the Black Friday High Street retailers, take a look at what’s on offer locally at Emmaus. All our items are competitively priced and come with the peace of mind that you’re helping our charity to support vulnerable people, as well as the environment, through shopping sustainably.

In contrast to Black Friday, which sees customers making impulse purchases as retailers slash their prices for one day, Buy Nothing New Day aims to raise awareness of consumerism and encourage customers to shop more ethically, using their spending power to have a positive impact.

Second-hand doesn’t necessarily mean second-best

The organisers of this national campaign estimate that in the UK over £427 million can be saved by buying reused instead of new items.

Emmaus North Staffs sells a wide-range of good-quality pre-loved items at our two charity shops. We also run the Emmaus charity shop in the Potteries Centre in Stoke-on-Trent which specialises in quality second-hand clothing, shoes, books, music, film, bric-a-brac and various items of furniture for the home.

We also run a popular eBay shop, selling second-hand goods online at bargain prices.

Funds raised at our two charity shops and our eBay store, help Emmaus North Staffs continue to tackle furniture poverty in the local area. Each year our charity partners with local councils and housing associations to offer free items to more than 800 households who are without access to essential furniture and appliances. We’re also working on plans to provide accommodation in Stoke-on-Trent, for people experiencing homelessness.
