Last week the Emmaus Suffolk team at The Royal Oak had their first visit from a Food Safety Officer from Ipswich Borough Council to take a look at our kitchen and how we prepare and store food.

We are delighted to say that as a result of the visit, The Royal Oak was awarded a 5* food hygiene rating. Well done to the team at The Royal Oak for all their hard work getting the kitchen up to this incredibly high standard.

During the inspection, the officer checked:

  • how hygienically the food is handled, for example how we prepared, cook, re-heated, cool and store the food we make;
  • the condition of the structure of The Royal Oak and the kitchen, such as the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities;
  • how we manage and record what we do to make sure food is safe.

The hygiene standards found at the time of inspection were then rated on a scale. At the bottom of the scale is ‘0’ – this means urgent improvement is required. At the top of the scale is ‘5’ – this means the hygiene standards are very good.
