We’re celebrating here at Emmaus North East after our Community Manager has been named an Acumen Fellow of 2020.
John Harrison is one of 22 ‘bold and generous’ UK leaders who have been selected across a variety of sectors, disciplines and locations. They share a common vision to build a more inclusive, equitable and sustainable future. Together, along with the UK Acumen Academy, the 2020 Acumen Fellows will join forces to find ways to work together for good.
The Fellowship begins with a year-long intensive leadership programme. Fellows remain in their role while taking part in a series of week-long residentials and virtual seminars connected by group practice. This is where practical skills meet moral imagination. The programme is designed to increase a Fellow’s capacity to bridge our divides and take on long standing problems of poverty and injustice.
After the first year, Fellows become part of Acumen’s global community of social innovators – committed to lifelong learning, collaboration and accompaniment as they drive change.
When asked about his new appointment, John said ‘I hope that through participating in the Acumen Fellowship I can learn more about how Emmaus North East can work to combat poverty and social exclusion both locally and internationally’.
Before working for Emmaus North East, John Harrison worked overseas for a charity in Liberia. The charities’ focus was helping to support children to stay in school. Similarly to the beneficiaries of Emmaus North East, poverty was prevalent and the people John worked with also faced barriers in society and social exclusion.
Emmaus North East is very proud to be a part of this movement as we work to end poverty and homelessness.
