To mark 20 years of supporting people who have experienced homelessness, Emmaus Hertfordshire is launching a unique fundraising project  – The Emmaus £20 challenge.

We provide people who have experienced homelessness with a home for as long as is needed, training, support and access to meaningful work opportunities. This includes providing training and support to help our companions turn unwanted furniture into completely unique pieces for the home. Many of these go on sale in our shops, including our Out of the Workshop store in St Albans.

We want Hertfordshire businesses, groups and individuals to sign up to our £20 challenge which will see donated items of furniture transformed into completely bespoke items. Emmaus Hertfordshire will provide the items of furniture to be upcycled, and participants will be allowed to spend no more than £20 on materials to give these pre-loved items a complete makeover.

The items can be upcycled in whatever way the participants choose, and the new, bespoke items will go on display at our 20th birthday open day, to be held this summer. They will then go on to be sold in our shops in St Albans, Boxmoor and Tring to raise money for our charity.

Upcycling is a core part of Emmaus Hertfordshire’s work. Our workshop provides people who have experienced homelessness, known as Emmaus companions, with the opportunity to gain new skills by learning how to upcycle second-hand furniture. This also helps to save unnecessary items from going to landfill.

Duncan Lewis, CEO of Emmaus Hertfordshire, said

“This is an exciting year for us as we celebrate two decades of supporting people to rebuild their lives after homelessness. Our £20 Challenge provides a fantastic opportunity for our supporters to get involved with our celebrations while supporting the work we do.

“Whether you are a keen upcycler, or looking for a fun project for your club or workplace to get stuck into, we want to hear from you!”

We have a limited number of spaces available for businesses, groups and individuals to get involved. Please drop Gemma a line to secure your space.
