Brian began his working life as an engineer within the petrochemical industry, however, following a short period of homelessness at 25, he felt compelled to change his career path to join the social sector.
Having made the decision to move away from engineering, I initially spent some time within the NHS, working with those managing addiction. This helped guide my long-term career path, which led me into social housing, where I spent many years working within the homelessness section of a local authority, and later with a housing association. During this time, I also studied with the Chartered Institute of Housing and Anglia Ruskin University, specialising in social housing, community development, estate management and anti-social behaviour.
Most recently, I held the position of Director of Housing and Retail with one of the larger YMCAs in the UK. During my time there, I played a significant role in its growth creating more homes for young homeless and establishing and embedding an outstanding support service.
In addition to my many years of experience within the housing and support sector, I am an equally seasoned project manager, business planner and developer of services and people.
I join Emmaus Colchester at a very exciting time as the charity begins to commemorate its 15 years of operation, we see this year as one of reflection, celebration and sharing the incredible work of the staff, companions and trustees of Emmaus Colchester.
This year will also see the development and the launch of our new 5-year business plan that will take Emmaus Colchester on a journey that will ensure our work has greater reach and more impact on those we aim to serve.
I am extremely grateful to be given the opportunity to serve Emmaus Colchester as their new CEO and excited to be part of something that approaches homelessness in such a unique and fulfilling way – Emmaus Colchester offers a home, meaningful work, opportunities to contribute and support for those who need it – for as long as they need it.
