Emmaus is a homelessness charity with a difference.
We don’t just provide a bed, we provide a reason to get out of it too. Central to our ethos is the rebuilding of self-esteem, confidence, and skills through engagement in purposeful work. Companions volunteer full time in our social enterprise, consisting of five charity shops, an online shop, and a house clearance service.
Companions are provided with support, training and development to enable them to undertake roles throughout our enterprise, and in all aspects of running our stores.
The purpose of our Board is to provide sound governance to our organisation. This includes agreeing strategic direction, approving and reviewing policies and procedures, appointing executive staff and ensuring compliance with the objectives, purposes and values of our organisation, and with its governing document.
Trustees meet as a board 12 times each year and individual trustees may also get involved in other ways, as their time permits. We provide full induction training and offer reimbursements for travel expenses.

A memorable highlight as a trustee was our Christmas meeting in 2019 with companions, staff, volunteers and trustees. We had a strategy type morning and the feedback was fantastic. Everyone felt like they were part of something and really stepped up to think about how they could contribute to Emmaus, which is what community living is all about. Afterwards, all 40 of us went bowling and had loads of fun – that was a massive high point for me and a realisation that we had the basis of a good Emmaus community.
