Our vision

A world in which nobody is left without somewhere that they belong, people with whom they feel connected, and something to offer.

Emmaus South Wales is a homelessness charity with a difference.

We not only provide a bed but a reason to get out of it. We provide supported accommodation for people experiencing homelessness in our residential community based in Bridgend, South Wales.

Emmaus South Wales (ESW) is part of a global movement of charities with a shared ethos and theory of change. The Emmaus movement supports thousands of people each year globally, and over 850 ‘companions’ live in 29 UK Emmaus Communities. Each Emmaus community develops to meet the particular needs of its locality.

In the UK, Emmaus has a focus on homelessness due to the scale of the problem and the fundamental impact homelessness has on every other aspect of life.

Our theory of change is that to lead happy and healthy lives people need three core things:

  • A home and a community where they are connected to others, are welcomed and supported.
  • Purposeful activity in which they can find self-worth, take pride, and be valued.
  • To support others in need, and opportunities to make a contribution.

ESW therefore provides a home within a supported community, along with meaningful work, learning, and opportunities that enable people to rebuild their self esteem, be valued, and make a contribution.

How it works

Whilst living as part of our community, companions are provided with support, training, work experience and opportunities to rebuild their lives. Companions contribute to the community by working full time in our social enterprises. We currently run 3 re-use stores which sell pre-owned furniture and household goods, alongside clothing, and a Land Train visitor attraction. They are provided with training and support to undertake a wide range of roles, alongside a team of staff and volunteers.

Our Support Team provides individual, structured one to one support, working holistically and from a strengths based approach, to support our Companions to rebuild their confidence, self-esteem, health, and capacity. There is no time limit on our support and Companions can live within our community for as long as they need and benefit.  Alongside support, training and work experience in our Enterprises, companions are supported to develop skills and interests outside of their roles within the charity, and to build their social capital and individual well-being.

Emmaus uses social enterprise to generate revenue that pays for companions’ home, food and upkeep, as well as providing a small weekly allowance. This is key to restoring feelings of self-worth, showing companions that their actions make a real difference, both to their own life, and the lives of others.
