This Autumn, we’re thrilled to be hosting an exhibition to celebrate and share the amazing history of the All Hallows Convent, where our charity is based.

Our exhibition, created with the support of the All Hallows Community and The Heritage Lottery Fund, will follow the life and work of the order of Anglican nuns who once lived here.

All Hallows Convent, where Emmaus Norfolk & Waveney are based now, was built in 1876 but the history of the site started in 1859 with the House of Mercy. The sisters of All Hallows Community set up a home to care for and support vulnerable women. The convent soon developed and later a school and orphanage were developed on site.

Fast forwarding to the present day, Emmaus Norfolk & Waveney a secular charity took on a 99-year lease in 2011, providing a home for as long as is needed, support and meaningful work opportunities for up to 32 people who have experienced homelessness.

We are incredibly proud of the heritage of the site we call home and we know our companions really benefit from being in a rural site. We want to continue the legacy of All Hallows Community and this Autumn we are beginning to restore the refectory of the grade II listed building.

The refectory will be restored to its former use as a dining room and it will reopen as a restaurant servicing the public, visitors to a unique bed and breakfast and live-in residents, known as companions. This project will protect and restore part of a heritage building which is at risk of dilapidation, at the same time enabling the commencement of a new social enterprise. The refectory will support our companions to build new skills in hospitality and create a new income stream for supporting people who have experienced homelessness and trauma, who wish to rebuild their lives.

Join us on Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th September for a fascinating interactive exploration into the history of this special site. There’ll be something for everyone, with a historical treasure hunt and play park for children. Make sure to stop by our Old Orchard Cafe for lunch, cake & coffee, all of which is made on-site by our companions. Be sure to explore the beautiful grounds and orchard, and have a browse of our second-hand shop.

Event will be open 10am – 4pm, Saturday 16th & Saturday 17th September. No pre-booking required and free parking available.
