In the heart of Salford, a remarkable project is taking root, bringing together the power of nature and community. Emmaus Salford, an organisation dedicated to supporting individuals who have experienced homelessness, has joined forces with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Bridgewater to create a transformative community space and planting project known as “Plants for Pendleton.” This initiative not only aims to enhance the surroundings but also provides companions and volunteers with opportunities to develop new skills and knowledge in horticulture, while fostering self-sufficiency in growing vegetables.

The project sprouted its first seeds back in April 2023 when a core group of companions at Emmaus Salford expressed a keen interest in gardening and beautifying their environment. Eager to explore the potential of gardening as a therapeutic tool for individuals who have faced trauma or difficulties in life, Victoria, the community support manager, embarked on a journey to create a haven of well-being and mental health for the companions and staff.

Understanding that gardening has a unique ability to keep us physically fit, connect us with others, and provide solace in the embrace of nature’s wonders, Victoria saw the potential for the project so she reached out to Claire, a representative from RHS Bridgewater, who offered support and expertise to bring the project to fruition.

Victoria said: “I am hoping that this project will have a great impact on companions, staff and our surrounding community. Gardening and horticulture, mirror those who may need a little help and support in life, plants grow with just water and sunshine, however, if you wish to see your plants thrive, you must, at first understand what their needs are. They will need, nourishment, a safe space to grow, support while reaching their potential, and finally enjoyment when you watch them bloom.  I see this most days at Emmaus Salford with our companions, and wish for others to see what our companions can achieve.

Under the guidance of Victoria and Claire, a team of companions has come together to make Plants for Pendleton thrive. Companions Mr. B, Stephen, Wesley, and Darren have taken the lead, pouring their energy into building seating areas and enhancing the landscape surrounding Emmaus Salford. Together with their fellow companions and dedicated volunteers, they have embraced the art of cultivating plants from seeds and plugs, potting them up with care and attention. The resulting plants will be sold, ensuring the sustainability and continuity of the project.

The charity has also recently been awarded five thousand pounds in funding from the RHS Connected Communities Network Development Grant. The funding will be used to propel the ‘Plants for Pendleton’ Project.

The project demonstrates the power of nature to heal and rejuvenate, and the remarkable capacity of individuals to blossom when given the opportunity.
