Emmaus Salford is celebrating after receiving a donation of £2,500 from The Duchy of Lancaster Benevolent Fund.

The funding will be used to support the community throughout the ongoing cost of living crisis, affecting food, energy and fuel bills.

Emmaus Salford is currently supporting 16 formerly homeless people by providing them with a stable home, meaningful work and support for as long as they need it. Whilst at Emmaus, people gain skills, experience and confidence by working within the charity’s social enterprise and Lucie’s Pantry social supermarket.

The cost of living crisis is having a dramatically negative impact on charities like Emmaus Salford. The rising cost of food, energy, and fuel is especially affecting communities like Salford which house up to 24 people. Increasing monthly bills also mean decreasing incomes for charities like Emmaus Salford, as the public has less to spend.

Emmaus Salford operates Lucie’s Pantry, a social supermarket which aims to support people who are struggling to afford food and household essentials. Lucie’s Pantry is located next to the Community Homestore and has around 260 members who visit (or receive a delivery) once a week.

The Duchy of Lancaster Benevolent Fund is a Registered Charity set up in 1993 with the consent of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to benefit causes primarily within the County Palatine. The Duchy Fund now covers the Counties of Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside.

Jackie Smith, Community Director for Emmaus Salford says: “We are so very grateful for this donation, the fall out of covid and then into the challenges of the cost-of-living crisis, has severely impacted on our available funds to support our residential community running costs, our community is a large former care home, which also requires frequent and unplanned repairs such as replacement doors, roof and plumbing repairs, so funding such as this comes at a time when we really need it the most.”
