Do you care about people who are experiencing homelessness? Are you keen to make a difference and use your skills, experience and expertise to support a local charity? Get involved as a Charity Trustee at Emmaus Hull & East Riding to help with the development and sustainability of the charity, including strategy, governance and finances.

Emmaus Hull & East Riding is a vibrant and growing charity focused on supporting people affected by homelessness. Emmaus doesn’t just provide a bed for the night. We offer a home for as long as someone needs it, tailored support and meaningful work in our community and social enterprise. Emmaus is very much an operational charity, with up to thirty formerly homeless people actively working in social and retail enterprises every day of the week. Emmaus Hull & East Riding is part of a national Emmaus federation and an international Emmaus movement.

Our Board of Trustees is seeking new Trustees with management, marketing, retail or financial backgrounds. We are particularly interested in recruiting a Trustee with financial or accountancy experience. We welcome expressions of interest and applications from people of all backgrounds and beliefs and are keen to broaden the diversity of our Board of Trustees.

 

Main duties

  • Provide professional advice and support to our management team
  • Attend and contribute at trustee meetings including Board and Committee meetings
  • Maintain oversight of the charity’s activities: residential, social and retail
  • Visit and support our management and Companions in their daily tasks
  • Act as local ambassador for Emmaus Hull and East Riding.

Skills and experience needed

  • Experience of managing or running an enterprise (private or public) and/or the financial management of enterprises
  • High level of personal commitment to helping less fortunate people in society
  • Good people skills and experience within a team; ability to contribute to meetings
  • Connections to/within Hull and East Yorkshire; desire to see the area thrive in the future
  • Highly motivated, enthusiastic and a positive, can-do attitude
  • Desirable: Awareness of charity and/or social enterprise governance
  • Specifically for one trustee: Financial expertise and experience.

Time commitment

The Emmaus Hull & East Riding Board of Trustees meets every second month and there are Board Committees which meet at other times. We are looking for a new Trustees who can offer a time commitment of at least 1 day per month.
