“Barmy drain” as it is known locally has a special place in the heart of local people as some recount the times they used to bathe and swim in the warm water, which was heated by the local power station. It is also home to amazing habitats and wildlife including the humble water vole, which is often mistaken for a “rat”. Indeed “Ratty” in Graham’s “Wind in the Willows” perpetrated such a myth. There is also a family of swans that can occasionally can be seen swimming up the river. Get in touch and share your story of Barmy Drain.
