Emmaus Village Carlton trustees Lucy Dryburgh and Dean Bourke are currently representing our charity at the Emmaus World Assembly in Uruguay. More about this here. This is their latest report, on day five…

“In the UK the Emmaus communities tend to focus on people experiencing homelessness. The strong message from Emmaus’ World Assembly currently being held in Uruguay is much broader. Though the homelessness focus is far from irrelevant, other considerations include: injustice; racism; poverty; vulnerability; inequality. Such issues are deep challenges to many of our Emmaus colleagues around the world.

It is very enlightening to share time and experiences with these colleagues. We “never give up with our hopes and energy” and “keep dreaming” are two comments that will live with us for many years to come, from a colleague based in South America.

One very important agenda item is “international solidarity”. As a movement, Emmaus is committed to helping others (‘solidaritys). At the Assembly, the importance of this was further emphasised as an integral part of the Emmaus ethos. Local communities around the globe are encouraged to create plans to help those in need, in whatever way deemed most suitable. Find out about the solidarity work happening at Emmaus Village Carlton.

We will never forget the learnings from the Assembly and look forward to sharing these with our colleagues at Emmaus Village Carlton on our return.”
