Emmaus Village Carlton trustees Lucy Dryburgh and Dean Bourke are currently representing our charity at the Emmaus World Assembly in Uruguay.

The Emmaus World Assembly, which takes place from Monday 9 to Saturday 14 May, happens every four years in a different location. It sees people from Emmaus groups across the world, come together to discuss, debate and connect.

384 delegates from 34 countries are attending this, the 14th World Assembly; the event is being held at the historic Hotel Argentino in Piriapolis, Uruguay.

There’s a packed schedule at the Assembly, with workshops, discussions and cultural events taking place.  The Chair of Emmaus International, Patrick Atohoun (pictured) formally launched the event.

During the week, Emmaus members will be exchanging ideas and deciding on the 2021-2025 guidelines to strengthen the Emmaus movement, tackle the causes of injustice and keep our heritage alive.

Debates will be held on the environmental, economic, social and democratic challenges facing our movement today, the responses that we can develop collectively, and how we can preserve the values, principles and practices which have made our movement strong and unique – community, work, welcome, self-sufficiency, awareness-raising, and collaboration, particularly with the most excluded people in society.

Reporting live from Uruguay, Lucy and Dean said this morning: “The lovely weather and stunning location will not distract us from the heavy schedule for the week, involving debates, workshops and visits to local Emmaus communities. We are looking forward meeting great people and learning from their ideas and experiences. This is a unique event, and we are extremely grateful for the invitation!”
