People supported by Emmaus Merseyside will sleep more comfortably this Christmas thanks to a delivery of brand-new double beds.

Emmaus Merseyside is an award-winning charity that provides a home, training, work opportunities and individual support to people who have experienced homelessness. Thanks to funding from The Albert Hunt Trust, we have replaced all 28 beds at our community home in Seaforth.

The new beds are already being enjoyed by all residents of Emmaus Merseyside – known as Emmaus companions. Two years ago, companion Mikey spent Christmas sleeping rough on the streets of Liverpool.

Mikey commented: “I’m originally from Kenny (Kensington) in Liverpool and became homeless after I got evicted. From there I was on the streets for nine months and it was horrible. I was beaten up, urinated on, had knives pulled on me, robbed – I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.”

“I joined Emmaus Merseyside in January 2021 and from where I’ve come from, it feels absolutely amazing to be part of this community. I’ve changed a hell of a lot in that time.”

All Emmaus Merseyside companions have their own fully furnished en-suite bedroom with access to shared communal rooms, gardens, tailored support, and an opportunity to gain skills, training and work experience. Unlike a lot of provision for people who experience homelessness, Emmaus offers a home for as long as someone needs it.

Marc Bamber, Chief Operating Officer of Emmaus Merseyside, said: “The importance of a good night’s sleep on a comfortable bed in a warm home is something many people just take for granted. For many of our companions who have experienced the harsh realities of homelessness, having their own room in a safe and supportive community environment can make a massive difference to their lives.

“We are very grateful to The Albert Hunt Trust and all our local Emmaus Merseyside supporters for helping to fund the purchase of the new double beds. They are already being enjoyed and appreciated by our companions, helping to provide them with a good night’s sleep.”

The Albert Hunt Trust is a grant-giving charitable trust that supports local registered charities throughout the United Kingdom.
