Emmaus Leeds is looking for passionate people who want to share their skills, knowledge and experience as charity trustees. We are currently recruiting for a new trustee to join our board and help with effective governance and strategic development. We are particularly interested in someone with a business/finance background.
Emmaus Leeds is a homelessness charity providing more than just a bed for the night. We support people who have experienced homelessness and social exclusion by offering a home, work and an opportunity to progress.
Emmaus Leeds provides a home and support to to 28 companions (the name given to people supported by Emmaus). Our community home and social enterprise is based at St Mary’s Street, close to Leeds City Centre.
Emmaus communities support people on the journey out of homelessness, providing meaningful work and experiences as well as a stable home. Those who are ready to move on are supported to do so and whilst in the community, companions are offered training and support with help from dedicated support workers. Our most important principle is that people regain their self-esteem through work and not the provision of charity. This is a unique and innovative long-term solution to homelessness and something our companions take pride in.
Our companions work in our community home and social enterprise. Much of this work is based around the collection and sale of donated goods in our Secondhand Superstore, Market Stall and online shops. The money generated through this work sustains our community and supports our other charitable activities.
Emmaus Leeds is an independent charity but part of the wider Emmaus UK federation and Emmaus International movement, with strong principles of non-discrimination and social inclusion.
Like all charities, Emmaus Leeds relies on a diverse group of people to commit and participate as trustees. We aim to maintain a board of trustees which includes people with a mix of expertise, in areas such as leadership, housing, health and safety, legal and finance. We are currently looking for a new trustee with expertise and experience in accounting and business development.
Becoming a trustee at Emmaus Leeds is an opportunity to use and develop your skillset for a worthwhile cause. The role offers variety, responsibility and satisfaction, especially seeing people overcome challenges to achieve their goals.
Trustees meet as a board four times a year and individual trustees are involved in other ways as their time permits. Emmaus Leeds trustees need to be aged 18 or above, able to make a commitment to Emmaus and its principles, have social concern, independent judgement and work as part of a team. Being a trustee is a voluntary commitment but we are able to reimburse travel and out-of-pocket expenses.
