We are looking for an experienced retail manager with exceptional people management skills, to join our team and help ensure that Emmaus Cambridge remains an attractive, multi-faceted destination for visitors and customers.
Emmaus Cambridge is a charity and social enterprise, providing a home for up to 50 formerly homeless people (companions) who are working their way out of homelessness by recycling and re-selling furniture and other goods. We run a busy café, shop, and emporium from our community home in Landbeach, as well as selling goods via eBay our e-commerce site and other external markets.
In this new role, you will be a central part of our staffing team, responsible for managing and developing all our non-café retail and e-commerce activity. You’ll manage a team of up to 4/6 employees and make key decisions regarding display, pricing, merchandising, stock control, and organising the flow of goods onto the shop floor. You will also be responsible for managing volunteers working in your area and, in collaboration with the Support Manager, supervise and co-ordinate companions involved in retail activity.
The ability to communicate effectively and build great working relationships is essential. You won’t just be working closely with our diverse community of staff, companions, and volunteers; you’ll also be developing external partnerships, ensuring that Emmaus Cambridge is promoted in the local area to evolve and improve our business activities, and representing Emmaus Cambridge at national and international Emmaus meetings.
To succeed in this role, you’ll need to be resilient with a robust but empathetic, collaborative, and creative approach. As well as your extensive retail experience (ideally some of which will be in recycling or second-hand retail), you’ll also have experience in commercial or business management, financial management and budget responsibility, and proven experience of successfully managing a team. In addition, the ability to stay calm and cope under extreme pressure is a must. This can be a challenging environment to work in but it’s also very rewarding and you will play a key role in supporting and empowering all members of our community to achieve their full potential.
You will need a full clean driving licence. A good level of physical fitness is also important, as you will need to be able to lift and move heavy objects. Due to the nature of the role, you will be subject to an enhanced disclosure and barring check for work with vulnerable adults.
If you think you have what we’re looking for, along with an open mind, a sense of humour, and the rare ability to juggle jellyfish, Emmaus Cambridge could be the place for you!
