This Trustees Week, we extend a warm welcome to four new trustees who play a vital role, volunteering their time and working together to support and steer the direction of our charity.

Simon Botterill

Simon is a qualified accountant with over 40 years’ experience working within business and financial management, working at board level for 30 years. His other areas of responsibility include HR, IT, legal and property.

When he retired from full-time work at the end of 2020, he decided to commit some time to voluntary work.

He said: “I had visited Emmaus Village Carlton prior to my retirement and was impressed by the operation and the ethos of the community, so after I retired I offered to help as a volunteer.”

A vacancy arose for the Treasurer of Emmaus Village Carlton which matched Simon’s skills and experience, so he became a trustee and took on this additional role. He aims to continue volunteering and hopes this hands-on experience will help him to contribute effectively towards the ongoing success of the charity.

Ian Henderson

Ian is a Senior Partner at Henderson Services LLP which has been established for over 20 years and provides independent cyber security management, IT transformation services and project work for the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

A Chartered IT Professional (CITP) with over four decades of experience, Ian is a trustee and acting chair for the Charity IT Association (CITA) and a former trustee for charitable medical foundation MedicAlert.

He is also a former Non-Executive Director (NED) with a local government social enterprise and holds memberships of the Institute of Directors, Chartered Management Institute, British Computer Society and the Chartered Institute of Information Security Professionals.

Ian has over three decades of Senior IT Management experience spanning sectors including financial services, local government, education, retail, logistics and distribution, insurance, housing, airports, NHS, charities and the hospitality industries.

Emily Willis

Based in Buckinghamshire with her partner Sam and tabby cat, Luna, Emily has previously lived and worked both in the UK and abroad. Her love of travelling and her degree in Spanish and French gave her the opportunity to experience different cultures.

With a career background in retail and hospitality, Emily most recently worked for the John Lewis Partnership for the supply chain. The pandemic was a time of re-evaluation for Emily who decided to step away from her retail career and work towards becoming a Speech and Language Therapist. Keen to give back to her local community, Emily has been carrying out some work experience in the NHS and at a local school.

She said: “I feel really privileged to have been chosen to be part of an organisation that makes such a difference to people’s lives and the society we live in, with a strong purpose at its core and such a rich history.”

Dominique Cox

Dominique was employed in her local police service for 13 years, working with vulnerable people and families and investigating serious criminal offences. It was during her time with the police service that she heard about Emmaus; a man who had sadly lost his life had been a former companion and those who knew him spoke positively about the impact Emmaus Village Carlton had on him.

After leaving the police Dominique worked in family litigation, helping people in crisis due to the breakdown of family relationships. Whilst on maternity leave she designed and ran a project for disadvantaged local families, fostering a support network and bank of resources. She later moved into charity management and currently works for a national benevolence charity for legal professionals.

She said: “it’s all about the companions. If I can channel my enthusiasm and experience into improving their day-to-day experience of being part of Emmaus Village Carlton, then my role as Trustee will be a worthwhile one.”
