I’ve been volunteering at Emmaus Village Carlton since February 2022.

I live in a village very nearby and before I started as a volunteer, I always used to visit as a customer. During the covid lockdown I especially enjoyed the bistro’s takeaway service, treating myself to the occasional coffee and a cake.

I always said that when I retired, I wanted to use some of my time to support a local charity. So, when that time came, I got in touch with Emmaus to find out about volunteering. I arranged to come and help out once a week in the bistro.

I enjoy volunteering in the bistro. It’s a sociable place. I’m kept very busy, which I like. I’m not the kind of person who likes to sit around; I want to feel useful and productive.

Before I retired, I was an Accounts Assistant, so working in the bistro is very different. I like serving customers and working behind the till taking orders. I’m learning new skills; I’m currently training to make barista coffees and feel proud that I’m taking on a new challenge.

I love the ethos of Emmaus, especially the fact that people can stay here for as long as they need the support; it’s not just a bed for the night. I also appreciate that people are given the opportunity to work; I feel that helps to give them a focus and a purpose.

It’s been good to make new friends after retirement and start a new chapter. All the companions and staff have been very friendly and welcoming, and I feel that my contribution is valued.

I get a lot out of volunteering and would recommend it. It is good to feel a part of the Emmaus Village Carlton community and I’m so pleased its now part of my routine every week.
