After a hiatus of two consecutive years due to Covid-19, The Winter Night Shelter MK is thrilled to announce it will be opening its night shelters this winter, for people in need of emergency overnight accommodation.
However, the current cost of living crisis is forcing more people into stressful and uncertain circumstances, and the welfare team working at the organisation’s day centre have been busier than ever during the week.
The team is receiving more than 250 people each week, some of whom will desperately need somewhere to sleep each evening.
Appealing for volunteers, our Chief Executive Rob Avann said: “The Winter Night Shelter Milton Keynes is organising night shelters and emergency accommodation in communities across the city and they have a desperate need for volunteers to help them run these successfully.
“It’s the first time since the pandemic they have opened so it’s vital they have enough volunteers to provide these essential facilities for vulnerable people during the cold winter months. We work closely with The Winter Night Shelter MK and lots of referrals have become companions within our community – they do an incredible job supporting those affected by homelessness.”

There are lots of different roles based either in the overnight shelters located throughout Milton Keynes, or in the welfare centre at Unity Park Station which will be hosting the evening meal and morning breakfast service.
Volunteers in previous years have said that as well as a sense of pride to be supporting visitors to the Winter Night Shelter, they also gain a sense of enrichment in their own lives and enjoy meeting new people and forming new friendships.
