CLOSING DATE: Ongoing LOCATION: Emmaus SLC TYPE: Volunteer

Are you a chef or cook looking to offer your spare time to volunteer for a local homelessness charity?

Emmaus South Lambeth Community (Emmaus SLC) was established in 2007 to help alleviate poverty and homelessness in London. We are part of the Emmaus federation of charities across the UK. Our vision is a world in which everyone has a home and a sense of belonging. Our mission is to work together to overcome homelessness and social exclusion.

Emmaus SLC is one of 29 Emmaus communities and 5 groups, each of which is an independent charity. We offer accommodation for as long as it is needed, a monthly allowance, personalised support and meaningful work in a social enterprise to our residents (known as Companions) who have experienced homelessness. This provides the long term support needed to break the cycle of homelessness. We can currently support up to 45 Companions at any one time across our residential sites in West and South Norwood.

What will I be doing?

  • Weekly volunteering from 9.00am – 5.30pm for an initial commitment of at least 3-6 months
  •  Working with Companions and staff to cook , prepare and serve a hot lunch and/or dinner for between 30 – 40 people per sitting
  •  Share knowledge and experience – work together as part of a team to help provide nutritious, healthy and delicious food
  •  Contribute towards recipes and meal planning
  • Help organise and store food donations and fareshare deliveries – support efforts to improve sustainability and reduction of food waste
  • Washing up, tidying and cleaning the kitchen
  • A Level 2 Food Hygiene and Safety certificate will be required, but this course can be offered as part of the volunteer role.

What you’ll get out of volunteering:

  • Become part of a community, you’ll make lots of new friends and see the difference you make towards Emmaus SLC
  •  Experience of volunteering for a homelessness organisation, supporting our goals to help people overcome homelessness, poverty and social exclusion
  • Full training and induction: we’ll always make sure you’re fully equipped for the tasks you’re involved in and feel comfortable doing them. Strengthen your skills and share your experience in: Food hygiene, cooking and kitchen management
  • Travel expenses and lunch provided
