After 6 years of service Jake, our Business & Retail Manager for Emmaus SLC, is moving on from us to take the next steps in his career.

As the Business & Retail Manager it was Jake’s responsibility to manage our Wallington shop. He ensured the shop was running smoothly, and to support Companions and volunteers in learning new skills.

Before we said goodbye to Jake, we asked him some questions about his time at Emmaus SLC.

What was your favourite aspect of working at Wallington?

“For me, the best part was the people I worked with. I enjoyed being around the staff and Companions. It was a really fulfilling to see many Companions grow in confidence and develop their skills.”

“I liked the varied nature of things. Not one day was the same. Whether times were high or low things were always interesting.”

Is there anything you took away from working at Emmaus SLC?

“I have developed skills which will no doubt benefit me in the future. Working for Emmaus is a unique experience and one which you can really learn from. My time as a manager has improved my ability to keep stressful situations under control and ensure things are organised. Even now that I’ve left, I still do things like price random items I see when going to the shop, just like I did at Emmaus.”

What will you miss about the job?

“I will definitely miss my colleagues, Companions and the unique work environment.”

What is your new job?

“My new role will be a Trip Leader with a European coach company. I’m really looking forward to it – it will be a fun challenge.”

Jake passes on his thanks to all the staff, Companions, and volunteers he met during his time at Emmaus:

Abbe Pierre once asked for people to open their homes & their hearts and his plea formed the basis for Emmaus as we know it today. However, I have found that this openness & accepting is not solely focused on companions. Volunteers and staff like myself (even customers) are subject to the same open and accepting environment. And for that, I thank you all. Good luck to the charity & to everyone involved.

Good luck with your next chapter, Jake!
