From September 1st – 3rd Emmaus SLC held its annual Solidarity Events for 2023; The Spinathon 2023 and the Coffee & Cake sale.

For those unaware, every year Emmaus SLC hosts two fundraising events which we call our ‘Solidarity Events’ to raise money for two beneficiaries as voted on by our own Solidarity Committee. This year our chosen beneficiaries were Street Storage and the Emmaus Europe Ukraine Fund.

Street Storage is a local charity which stores the personal belongings of those struggling with homelessness to ensure their safety. The Emmaus Europe Ukraine Fund supports Ukrainian refugees who are living in Emmaus communities in Europe.

Coffee & cake sale:

We held a Coffee & Cake sale at our shops in Wallington, West Norwood and Caterham. Tables were set up and decorated with a varied selection of tasty cakes and treats. Also available were hot drinks including Americanos, Lattes, Espressos, Teas and more.

Many of the delicious cakes on sale were kindly baked and donated to us by trustees and friends of Emmaus SLC. We greatly appreciate these contributions!

Spinathon 2023:

Our Spinathon was kicked off on Friday, September 1st at 9:30 am by Danny, our Head of Finance & Community. Across the 3 days numerous other members of staff, Companions, trustees and friends each took turns to cycle on a static exercise bike for an hour straight – some participants even cycled more than once!

The Spinathon was finished off Sunday, September 3rd at 2:30pm by Helen, a friend from fellow charity The Spires Centre. Huge well done to everyone who took part! The Spinathon certainty proved to be a real test of endurance for those who cycled. It’s not easy cycling for such a long time but everyone who took part showed great determination.

We would like to thank everyone who came down and supported us during these events. Whether you purchased a slice of cake or donated to our JustGiving page, your actions helped us a lot and will go towards supporting two brilliant causes. Solidarity is a key element of the Emmaus ethos.

Our JustGiving page is still active, and we are just shy of reaching our goal of £2,500, so you can donate if you would like to. Any donation you can make, big or small, would be very much appreciated.
