On Wednesday 8th of March it was International Women’s Day. To celebrate this important occasion some members of Emmaus SLC staff attended an event hosted by our good friend and fellow homeless charity The Spires Centre.

The Spires Centre is a Streatham based charitable organisation which offers a variety of services to support those who are struggling with homelessness. Notably, since 1999 they have provided an essential service called Spires Streetlink which is designed to support women who have involved themselves in sex work as a result of their homelessness. We have written an article on this service and their efforts.

For more information on The Spires Centre and their work we encourage you to visit their website and read about the services they provide. Please also see their Twitter and Instagram.

The International Women’s Day event was dedicated entirely to female empowerment. Spires addressed the importance of female companionship, and acknowledged as well as celebrated the hard work that all women do. There was an impressive turnout and the overall environment was very inclusive, positive and inspiring.

There were various guest speakers at the event. Speakers included Lambeth Health Inclusion Team Nurses, DV Abuse Service Respieto and more.

The different speakers touched upon topics such as their own personal stories of overcoming adversity, the importance of women supporting each other and what we all can do to help further empower women.

Please see below for the full schedule:

There were various toiletries, clothes, shoes and more which were kindly donated to Spires from local businesses and organisations, and were free for all the women who attended.

We would like to thank The Spires Centre for putting on such a brilliant event.
