We are delighted that Emmaus Gloucestershire has scooped a top award for our positive impact on the environment.

Our charity has won the Best Homelessness Prevention Recycling Service award in BUILD’s National Recycling & Waste Management Awards 2020.

At Emmaus Gloucestershire, we support people who have experienced homelessness and social exclusion, and saved 566 tonnes of second-hand items from the waste chain in 2019. Instead, these items were collected by our companions and sold in our five shops across the county.

Founded in 2018, the BUILD Recycling & Waste Management Awards celebrate the achievements and innovations made by the companies and individuals from within the recycling and waste management industry.

Joe Feeley, Chief Executive at Emmaus Gloucestershire, said:

“We are delighted to have our work recognised in this way by the national recycling industry. Our five shops not only help to fund our work supporting people who have been homeless but allows us to fulfil our commitment to reducing the amount sent to landfill in Gloucestershire.

“Through our social enterprise, we are able to offer meaningful work to the people we support so they can learn new skills and gain work experience. Our residents work extremely hard to collect, sort, sell and recycle all items donated to us and play a huge role in the amount we save from landfill. This award is a huge credit to their work.”

We are now working on a new initiative to recycle copper, which will help to minimise the release of damaging toxins through the refinement of new cooper and we are also working with a local company to recycle bric-a-brac, duvets and soft toys that cannot be sold.

Awards Coordinator Harwinder Pawar, said: “It has been a delight to connect with businesses around the world who work in Recycling and Waste Management. I offer a heartfelt congratulations to all who are recognised in the awards and wish them a fantastic new year ahead”.
