Make a difference

Sussex Emmaus is a charity that empowers people to overcome homelessness for good. We provide people with a stable home and life-changing, tailored support.

We’re here for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. We see the person and their strengths – and help them get their life back on track, based on the future they want to create. As part of a nationwide movement of local Emmaus charities, we equip people with valuable skills, training and work experience to achieve their goals.

Working together, and with your support, we’re ending homelessness one person at a time.

Volunteers must be aged 18 and over and will require a DBS check. Due to this, we are unable to offer short term placements.

Many of our volunteer roles are based within our Portslade community. From helping out in our stores and café, to sorting donated items and supporting in our community garden, we have a variety of roles for different ages, skills, interests and abilities.

We welcome volunteers of all ages (18+) and abilities, and we’re always happy to match you with a role that fits your strengths and goals.

Volunteer FAQs

What’s the process for becoming a volunteer at Sussex Emmaus?

Firstly, please complete our application form. We ask for two references, these can be from an employer, teacher, colleague, or neighbour. We’ll carry out some checks to ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone in our community.

All volunteers, staff, and trustees are required to complete a basic DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check, which is paid for by Emmaus and submitted online. Already have a DBS? We’ll still need one processed specifically for our organisation.

Having a conviction won’t automatically stop you from volunteering, we’ll just have a conversation about it before moving forward. Once your DBS is approved and ID verified, we’ll invite you in for an induction, a tour of the site, and of course, a cuppa!

If you would like to do a trial day before committing to signing up as a volunteer, please email [email protected]

How much time do I need to commit?

Ideally, we ask for a standard ‘shift’ (a minimum of four hours) a week. If you can only spare a few days or several afternoons a month, your time is a valuable gift. Many volunteers choose a regular day and time to help plan around their lives. Volunteer shifts take place during our opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 9:30am – 5:00pm.

Can I claim travel expenses?

Yes. We can reimburse local travel costs, including bus/train fares or petrol—just speak with us when you begin volunteering.

Can I volunteer in more than one role?

Absolutely! Many of our volunteers enjoy helping across different areas—from sorting donations and driving vans to helping in the café or at the tills. We also welcome extra help at our busy seasonal fairs, which happen four times a year and are always buzzing with activity.

Is there a minimum age to volunteer?

Yes, you must be 18 or over to volunteer with Emmaus Sussex. Regrettably, we cannot take on short term college or university work experience (less than three months)

Will I receive any training?

Yes. All volunteers receive a full induction, which includes Health & Safety training. You’ll also be supported by your manager, companions, fellow volunteers, and our volunteer coordinator. Where possible, we may also offer additional training to help you develop new skills.
