As temperatures continue to fall across Sussex, we are urging the local community to take action to help protect people rough sleeping during the winter months.
Cold weather can be extremely dangerous for people experiencing homelessness, significantly increasing the risk of illness, injury and, in the most severe cases, loss of life. Support from the public can make a vital difference. Below is guidance on how you can help if you see someone rough sleeping on the streets of Sussex this winter.
If you are worried about someone rough sleeping , including those in tents or doorways, please report your concerns via StreetLink. StreetLink connects people sleeping rough with local outreach services who can offer appropriate support.

Warm clothing, socks, gloves, hats, toiletries and sleeping bags can provide immediate comfort and protection during cold weather. We recommend checking with local charities before donating to ensure items are suitable and currently needed.
Sussex Emmaus provides accommodation, tailored support and meaningful work opportunities for people who have experienced homelessness. You can support our work by donating your household items, volunteering your time, making a donation, shopping in our second-hand store, or sharing our local appeals to help sustain our services throughout the winter.
If you choose to give directly to someone rough sleeping, items such as food, warm clothing, hot drinks or gift cards are often more helpful than cash. Taking a moment to acknowledge someone with kindness and respect can also help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.
While emergency support is crucial during winter, long-term solutions to homelessness are equally important. Challenging misconceptions, raising awareness and supporting approaches focused on prevention, housing and ongoing support are key to creating lasting change.
Karen Chapman, Chief Executive of Sussex Emmaus, said:
“We work year-round to support people on their journey out of homelessness, but winter brings added urgency. We are calling on the Sussex community to act with care and compassion during these cold months. By reporting concerns, supporting local charities like Sussex Emmaus and giving in thoughtful ways, we can help people stay safe this winter and support them towards a more stable future.”
