At Sussex Emmaus, we believe that overcoming homelessness takes more than just a roof over your head. That’s why we offer a unique, long-term solution that combines safe, stable accommodation with meaningful work and tailored support. Our approach helps people who have previously experienced homelessness rebuild their lives with dignity, purpose, and hope for the future.

Since opening our doors in 1997, we’ve supported more than 1,500 people, known in our community as companions, many of whom have faced significant and complex life challenges. Today, we provide a supportive home for up to 58 individuals, offering not just shelter, but belonging.

Despite growing pressures on the charity sector, Sussex Emmaus continues to evolve. We are proud to be the largest Emmaus community in the UK, driven by a strong sense of togetherness, a positive outlook, and a determination to keep improving.

Our impact doesn’t stop with our companions. Through our social enterprises, including charity shops, a café, and house clearance services, we create employment, volunteering, and training opportunities. We support local economies, reduce waste, and stand in solidarity with those facing hardship.

Emmaus is part of a secular, global movement with over 400 groups across 40 countries, including 30 Emmaus communities in the UK. Each one aims to be self-sustaining, with profits reinvested to support others in need.

Together, we’re creating a stronger, more compassionate society, one person, and one second-hand treasure, at a time.
