Spinathon 1

On the 1st and 2nd of September Emmaus Surrey and Lambeth will be taking part in a 24 hour charity ‘Spinathon’ in aid of The Pavement Magazine and Emmaus Iasi. The 24 hour event will see 12 members of our community partaking in a static bike-ride that will continue throughout the night.

Solidarity is a key element of the work done here at Emmaus, by way of showing support for those who are less fortunate than ourselves. The Spinathon’s test of endurance is one of the many yearly events we hold in support of another cause. This year the two beneficiaries of this event are The Pavement Magazine and Emmaus Iasi, both of which were voted for by our solidarity committee and companions. Each beneficiary will receive 50% of the money raised.

The Beneficiaries

The Pavement Magazine is a publication aimed at homeless people. Formed by volunteers and homeless sector professionals the magazine aims to provide advice, whilst also delivering poignant, hard-hitting and eye-opening stories. The magazine is tailored to a homeless readership, offering news and help to those living rough which they may not necessarily hear elsewhere. It features many pieces written by homeless or previously homeless individuals, therefore supplying honest accounts and guidance. Its inclusion of The List features a frequently update directory of homelessness services. This provides a ‘lifeline’ for people having to live on the streets.

Emmaus Iasi is a community formed in Romania’s second city. A majority of the community comes from the regions orphanages. It provides education, accommodation and training to help those achieve independence. The community is involved in various projects and initiatives, with work spanning issues surrounding homelessness within the city of Iasi. Emmaus Iasi has two shops which sell recycled furniture, as well as furniture made from the community’s own workshop. Emmaus Iasi does not just provide a home for those in need, but also guarantees support and guidance to those who require it.
