At Emmaus, we work hard to rebuild people’s lives after homelessness.

As Alex explains in his story below, our 30 communities across the UK welcome people in after experiencing homelessness and provide a home for as long as they need it, ongoing support, and work opportunities until they’re back on their feet and ready to move on to the next stage of their lives.

Recent research by homelessness charity Crisis found that 282,000 households were judged by local authorities to be homeless or threatened with homelessness in 2020/21.

The cost of living crisis, coupled with the end of government pandemic support initiatives, means even more people are likely to become at risk of homelessness.

Our support is needed more than ever.

Alex’s story

“When I lost my mum, I had a bit of a downward spiral. I was sofa surfing here, there and everywhere, and eventually I ended up living on the streets.

“I was lucky to get a place at Emmaus Mossley. Straight away, the community felt like family.

“I stayed with Emmaus for around ten years but in 2020 it came to a point where Emmaus had done everything it could to help me and if I didn’t help myself, my life wasn’t going change. I’d had lots of education and training – everything from first aid to upholstery. It all helped to build my self-confidence back up.

“I was applying for jobs and getting offers left, right and centre and in March 2021 I started to work at a packaging manufacturer. I’ve already progressed in the firm and absolutely love it.

“Finding my own place to live hasn’t been so easy but for six months I was able to stay living in the Emmaus community while contributing towards my keep. The support I received was superb and eventually I found a place of my own to rent. It was strange at first, I wasn’t used to it being so quiet. After a day at work, I now love the peace and quiet, and it feels like I’ve got my life back.”
