Feeding the Local Community – is this you?
Take a look at Joan’s Coffee Shop at Emmaus Cambridge. That’s what we’re trying to copy (but you’ll add ideas of your own).
We’re leasing one of Ipswich’s larger pubs from July. It already has a commercial kitchen but we want you on board now to make sure we get it right, and so you can understand the complexities of working with a volunteer workforce.
We don’t demand qualifications and experience, although something relevant would be useful. But you will have to be able to answer ‘yes’ to most of the following questions, and tell us the stories to prove it.
Can you multi-task? Not just poaching eggs while watching the toast. Add rescuing a trainee, phoning a supplier, keeping an eye on the customers and sending someone to sort things.
Kings and commoners? Your steady customers will be those on low incomes. You’ll be trying to attract passing trade. Visitors to Emmaus may have titles. You are at ease with everyone and you make everyone at ease.
You’re a bit different? And you like to DO different. Life without challenge and change would be boring. And a bit of risk is OK.
Common Sense ++ You have a strong sense of what’s right. And you like taking your own decisions to make it ‘right’. Otherwise things go wrong. People might call you a control freak but they like you anyway.
Are you a party animal? Not alcohol and ecstasy but fun and energy follow you around. Your kitchen will be full of comedy and camaraderie. It’s a positive vibe. (**And it draws in volunteers and other staff to help.)
Can you make money? It’s easy delivering top service with a big budget. You’ve had limited resources in the past but your commercial skills have helped you turn a profit. A profit that can now help to support Emmaus.
If you would like to apply for this job, send your stories to [email protected] and we’ll let you know within a week if you are a contender. Attach your cv. Don’t bother polishing it, it’s just the basics we want. No cv? We only need education and experience – with rough dates.
You may have some idea where some of your skills and attitudes came from: work ethic from Mum; empathy from Dad; common touch from being one of a big family. Tell us stories about that as well.
To help us get back to you quickly, please use Brian’s email address above – don’t contact Emmaus Suffolk directly. And to help us again, where did you see this ad?
Closing date is Monday 21st June 2021 and interviews will be held during the last week of June.
