Emmaus South Wales is seeking a new Chair of Trustees to lead our board and help shape the future of our work tackling homelessness and social exclusion.

After seven years of committed voluntary service, our previous Chair has stepped down. We’re now inviting expressions of interest from individuals who are passionate about our mission and ready to lead with vision, compassion, and clarity.

About the Role

Emmaus South Wales is part of the wider Emmaus Federation — a movement that supports people who have experienced homelessness by providing them with a home, individual support and work opportunities within a community setting. Our community in Bridgend currently provides accommodation, support, and employment opportunities to 24 formerly homeless people.

The Chair leads the board in overseeing strategy, governance, and the sustainability of the charity. Working closely with the CEO and fellow trustees, you will help steer our organisation through the next phase of development and impact.

You’ll act as a visible and effective ambassador for Emmaus, and support the CEO as a critical friend, offering guidance and challenge where needed, while fostering strong relationships with staff, volunteers, supporters and stakeholders.

Time Commitment

We estimate the role requires around 12 hours per month, including:

  • Attending six board meetings per year
  • Joining occasional working groups or events
  • Supporting and supervising the CEO
  • Acting as a spokesperson or representative as needed

The time commitment is flexible and can be shaped around your availability. Some additional time may be required for strategic planning or responding to key issues as they arise.

Who We’re Looking For

We’re seeking someone who has:

  • Experience as a trustee, board director, or senior leader
  • Strong strategic thinking and decision-making skills
  • Excellent people and relationship management abilities
  • A clear understanding of charity governance and oversight
  • A commitment to tackling homelessness and social injustice

You don’t need to have been a Chair before — we welcome applicants who are ready to grow into the role, with support from our outgoing Chair and fellow trustees.

Why Join Emmaus South Wales?

This is a unique opportunity to make a real difference to people’s lives. As Chair, you’ll be helping build a stronger, more compassionate community — one that believes in second chances and lasting change.

Although this is a voluntary position, reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
