This Trustees’ Week (6 – 10 November 2023), we’re celebrating the contribution of our current trustees and appealing for new trustees to join our charity.

Emmaus South Manchester currently has 10 people who give their time and expertise as trustees. We are keen to add more people to our board of trustees and are appealing for people with experience in building, construction and project management.

Our charity has developed a thriving social enterprise in Wythenshawe and our aim is to open a new Emmaus community to support people who experience homelessness and those suffering social exclusion. Emmaus communities provide a home and companionship for as long as someone needs it, as well as support, training and meaningful work experience.

Frances Hirst, Chair Emmaus South Manchester, said: “I first became a charity trustee more than 20 years ago. It’s such a rewarding role and I have found much satisfaction, working alongside others to help charities and ultimately the people they support.

“We are appealing for new trustees to join Emmaus South Manchester, particularly people with an interest in housing, homelessness, building and construction. Becoming a trustee provides you with professional challenge and personal development, alongside the satisfaction from supporting a cause you care about.

“My main piece of advice to anyone thinking of becoming a charity trustee is that whilst people will look to you for leadership, it is not a position of power. You are there to ensure that everyone works together as a team to achieve the charity’s goals.”

Working together with purpose

Trustees’ Week is a national campaign to celebrate the achievements of nearly one million trustees across the UK. Trustees are the individuals who make strategic decisions on behalf of the charity and have general control and management of the administration of a charity.

The board of trustees at Emmaus South Manchester give their time voluntarily and work together collectively to ensure the charity has a clear strategy, and that its work and goals are in line with its vision. Emmaus South Manchester is currently working to raise the funds, support and partnerships needed to develop and open a new residential community.
