For Recycle Week 2022, Emmaus South Manchester has launched a new reuse area within the Wythenshawe Emporium charity store.
Emmaus South Manchester volunteers have transformed a former performance stage into additional charity retail space. The new stage area was launched during Recycle Week 2022 and showcases a range of pre-loved fashion, vintage items and upcycled goods.
The area has added an extra 20% floorspace to our Emporium charity store. Proceeds from the sale of these items go towards our aim of opening an Emmaus community to support homeless people and those suffering social exclusion.
Geoff Hall, one of the team of volunteers who helped to create the new area, said: “We’ve loved working together on this project to expand the retail area of our Emporium. It has been really satisfying to give new life to something that was tired and past its best. Come and see what we’ve done and pick yourself up a vintage bargain!”
Recycle Week – 17 to 23 October 2022 – is Recycle Now’s flagship annual event which is a celebration of recycling across the nation. It’s the one week of the year when everyone can come together to achieve one goal: to recycle more of the right things, more often.
A whopping 80% of households put one or more things in the rubbish bin that could have been recycled, or even better, reused. Emmaus South Manchester champions reuse, recycling and upcycling to save good items from going to waste whilst giving people the chance to save money and shop sustainably.
Mark Booth, Project Leader for Emmaus South Manchester, said: “Our new stage area is a great addition to our Wythenshawe Emporium. Our shoppers and supporters are already enjoying this new space, discovering sustainable fashion and vintage pieces at affordable prices.”
“I would like to thank all the volunteers involved in this project along with The Metal Store and Emmaus Bolton for their kind support to help us get the project completed in time for Recycle Week.”
The Metal Store provided its expertise to help source the new metal balustrades. Emmaus Bolton constructed and donated wooden steps to allow customer access to this new raised area of the Emporium.
The Emmaus South Manchester Emporium is a large 2,000sqft charity store located in the hall of St. Andrews Methodist Church, located at the junction of Brownley Road and Simonsway. The Emporium is open Thursday to Saturday, 10am-4pm, and has its own on-site workshops and a Community Café serving drinks, cakes and light refreshments.
