This week is #VolunteersWeek.
The act of volunteering aligns with the Emmaus ethos – to be selfless and do whatever you can to help others.
Whether it is driving our vans, sorting through donations or working behind the till, we always appreciate the hard work of our volunteers.
We asked Sheila, who has been volunteering at Shop 1 on Knights Hill for 6 years, why she chose to volunteer for us:
“I used to shop at Emmaus before I retired, charity shops and jumble sales have been a passion of mine since I was about 14 – then, treasures I would look for were fur coats and grandad shirts. I always wondered what it would be like to work in one so I applied to volunteer at Emmaus around 6 years ago – one day a week I’m lost to donation sorting in the basement – it’s hard work and not for everyone – you wouldn’t believe what we find – not for the faint-hearted.”
“Emmaus, where companions work alongside me, gives me the opportunity to really understand homelessness and its effect on ordinary, everyday people. Many companions I consider friends now, I guess I really give my time to them, I’m honoured to be part of the community and able to contribute in some way.”
We would like to thank Sheila for her contribution to Emmaus SLC.
