On Monday, 24th February, our Head of Finance & Community, Danny, and Mahesh, Companion, attended a Zoom call organized by Emmaus Europe, bringing together over 60 representatives from Emmaus communities including the UK, France, the Netherlands, Finland, and other European countries. The meeting marked the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, offering a platform to reflect on the ongoing impact and demonstrate solidarity with those affected.

The call was led by representatives from Emmaus Oselya, based in Lviv, who provided an update on the current situation of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine.

Emmaus Europe set up the Ukraine Fund in 2022 to provide financial assistance to our communities affected by the war in Ukraine. Since then, Emmaus communities across Europe have rallied together to fundraise for the Ukraine Fund. Collectively, we have raised between €300,000 and €400,000, which has contributed to the construction of a new social centre. This facility aims to provide crucial support for those affected by the war. They provide food, winter clothing, showering facilities, medical aid and more.

A short film documenting the impact of this project and the resilience of the Emmaus Oselya community has been made available online which is available to watch below:

Emmaus Europe have written their own article discussing the construction of the social centre and their plans for the future which can be read here.

The meeting served as a reminder of the ongoing crisis and the vital role that international solidarity plays in providing support and rebuilding communities. Emmaus SLC, as well as Emmaus Europe, will continue to stand with Emmaus communities in the Ukraine and all those affected by the war.

Talking about the meeting, Danny said:

“To hear directly from the staff and residents of Emmaus Oselya was a real privilege. The courage and resilience that they are showing in a wartime setting is very humbling, and brought home the reality of what they are experiencing. It also highlighted yet again, how Emmaus is an international movement, and the solidarity shown by Emmaus communities all across Europe for Ukraine is so encouraging and inspiring.”
