We would not be able to function without our team of dedicated volunteers. They provide help in lots of ways, from working in the shop and driving our vans, to supporting our companions with a range of activities.
Volunteering is a great way of giving back to the local community and supporting a good cause. It is also a great way of increasing your understanding of the charity, making new friends, reducing isolation and improving your skill set.
At Emmaus Sheffield, volunteers are an important part of the support network provided to the Companions and offer a rich source of different experiences and skills. Our Companions get to spend time with a more diverse set of people, broaden their horizons and feel valued. For those that struggle with social skills, having different people to work with helps make new situations that little bit more comfortable.

“It is a pleasure and a privilege to volunteer for Emmaus Sheffield. From seeing the wonderful site and opportunities available for homeless people; meeting the Staff Team and Companions; and realising what a unique and fulfilling enterprise has been created, I couldn’t not want to make some small contribution. Being a volunteer is like being part of a family – one that you want to help and succour – but also gives so much back. I have been welcomed into the Emmaus family wholeheartedly, my ideas have been treated with respect and my work appreciated. I have been able to help the Community by bringing in small amounts of funding and assisting with research and development, essential to its future development. Now retired, the volunteering experience affords me, personally, an opportunity to exercise my skills in research; keeps my brain active; and brings me many friends, for which I am grateful.”

“I have been a trustee for over 15 years and when I retired in 2022 I wanted to spend more time hands on in the community. I volunteer one or two days a week: one day in the garden/yard helping create our new garden and keeping things shipshape; and the other walking with two or three Companions in the beautiful Derbyshire countryside. When I retired I have to confess I was worried about stepping down from a high powered job as a partner in a major international law firm but working in our Community has made that transition so easy for me. I really enjoy spending time with everyone and seeing up close how lives are transformed through being involved in the project.”
