What causes homelessness?
It’s a question we’re asked often, and the honest answer is: there’s no single cause. Every person’s story is different. Some face challenges that push them into homelessness, whilst others facing similar circumstances don’t. That’s why our work at Emmaus Sheffield is never one-size-fits-all.
We’re committed to supporting people who find themselves homeless in South Yorkshire, providing them with a home, meaningful work in our social enterprises, and a community that helps them rebuild their lives. Currently, we support 18 Companions, giving them a safe space to develop confidence, skills, and a pathway to independence.
Why We Need You
Our trustees bring diverse skills, experience, and perspectives – and together with our passionate management team, they create a community that tackles complex challenges head-on. But we’re at an exciting crossroads.
We’re planning to grow, potentially increasing our Companion numbers by 25%. At the same time, we’re navigating challenges around funding, resources, financial systems, educational development, and wellbeing support – all whilst more people than ever are finding themselves in crisis.
What’s Involved
Our Board meets on the third Wednesday of each month at Sipelia Works, Sheffield, with remote joining available via Teams. You’ll also join one of our sub-committees, which meet quarterly. Beyond the meetings, you’ll be part of strategic decisions that directly improve lives.
Are You Up for the Challenge?
Whether you’re an experienced trustee or considering governance for the first time, we’re actively building a more diverse board and welcome applications from anyone who:
