The Minister for Rough Sleeping and Housing, MP Eddie Hughes, has visited Emmaus Salford to learn more about homeless support partnerships in the city.

Minister Hughes visited Emmaus Salford on Tuesday 10 August to find out how our charity and partners within the city are working together to help people affected by homelessness. The MP for Walsall North was joined on the visit by Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett and staff from partner organisations including Salford City Council, Salford Primary Care Together and Greater Manchester Mental Health.

The visit included a tour of The People’s Pods which provide temporary refuge to people sleeping rough. The pods are designed so that people can enjoy a safe and comfortable night’s sleep and access further support from a range of outreach workers.

Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett, said: “There is a huge partnership effort in Salford to help tackle homelessness and the housing crisis. The hard work from all teams is incredible. They are changing lives for the better every day and providing vital accommodation and support to those who need it most. Unfortunately, there are more than 5,000 people on the housing register in the city who are desperate for vital affordable homes.”

Emmaus Salford partnered with Salford City Council to open The People’s Pods in May 2020 as part of the city’s A Bed Every Night provision. People who stay in the pods are encouraged to access other services including the option to join Emmaus Salford’s residential community.

Rachel Richardson, Community Director at Emmaus Salford, said: “We’re extremely grateful to Minister Hughes for taking the time to visit Emmaus Salford. It was great for him to see first-hand the fantastic partnerships we have in Salford and hear from people on the ground – both those with lived experience of homelessness and support workers helping people towards a better future.”

Emmaus Salford supports 22 formerly homeless people by providing a stable home, meaningful work and support for as long as they need it. Alongside our residential community, we run a variety of social enterprises to help individuals and families in need.
