This past weekend, thousands gathered at Salford Quays for the “We Invented The Weekend” festival, a vibrant celebration of the historic campaign led by Robert Lowes in 1843, which granted mill workers a day off on Saturdays.
Since its inception in 2023, this two-day festival at MediaCityUK has become a highlight of the year, featuring diverse performances, wellness activities, delicious food and drink, and retail therapy.
Emmaus Salford was honored to participate in the Charity Super.Mkt, showcasing an array of vintage garments. We are thrilled to share that we raised nearly £2500, which will go directly towards supporting individuals who have experienced homelessness. A special highlight was seeing two of our companions take part in a fashion show on Sunday.
The festival is funded by Salford City Council, MediaCity (a Peel Group and Landsec partnership), Arts Council England and GMCA Culture Fund. It is governed and supported by Salford’s Culture & Place Partnership, a cross-city collective delivering Salford’s strategy for culture, creativity.
The event delivery partners are HemingwayDesign who hold an impressive track record of large-scale public engagement events across the country, and Quays Culture who have significant experience in delivering large and innovative outdoor art exhibitions in Salford Quays.
Our Chief Executive, Jackie Smith, expressed her gratitude: “As a small local charity, we are immensely thankful to be involved for the second year running. This event not only helps generate vital income for our charity but also offers a fantastic opportunity to engage our companions and stakeholders in a fun and meaningful weekend. We look forward to being part of this celebration for years to come.”
