Construction firm Casey has put the finishing touches to The People’s Pods, new emergency accommodation at homelessness charity Emmaus Salford.

Casey completed plumbing, a communal night kitchen and supplied materials to finish the fit-out of The People’s Pods. The emergency accommodation, located in the grounds of Emmaus Salford, will be used by people who are sleeping rough or at risk of homelessness.

Alan Taylor, Operations Director at Casey, said “At Casey, we put a lot of emphasis on working to benefit the communities in which we operate. Emmaus is a very worthy charity and we were delighted that we could help with the pods which expand the facilities they can offer.”

The work carried out by Casey, and subcontractor U-Heat, has been gifted to Emmaus Salford as part of the firm’s commitment to supporting local communities. The Casey team has been working to transform the neighbouring 23-storey Fitzwarren Court high-rise building along with 10 terraced homes on Rosehill Close.

The People’s Pods, due to open in November, will form part of Salford’s provision for the Greater Manchester Mayor’s A Bed Every Night scheme. The scheme provides a bed, warm welcome, and personal support for anyone who is sleeping rough or at imminent risk of sleeping rough in Greater Manchester.

Emmaus Salford currently supports 22 formerly homeless people at its established residential community on Fitzwarren Street. It is hoped that some of the homeless people supported in The People’s Pods will progress to become companions – permanent residents of Emmaus Salford who work in the charity’s social enterprise.

Rachel Richardson, Community Director at Emmaus Salford, said: “Thanks to the generous support from Casey, we are able to open The People’s Pods this autumn, providing an emergency refuge to people in Salford who are street homeless. I’d like to give a huge thanks to all of the Casey staff who have supported Emmaus Salford over the past few months.”
