Emmaus Salford is a registered charity (no. 1128162) and registered company (no. 6616666). As a registered charity we take our governance very seriously.

Legal and financial responsibility for the proper conduct of the Emmaus Salford’s affairs rests with the trustees, who must report annually to the Charity Commission and to Companies House.

Emmaus Salford is also a member of Emmaus International, Emmaus UK and the Emmaus North West Partnership.

Our Trustees

Louise Carney

Louise was appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2022. Louise has a background in laboratory research and has worked extensively in the higher education sector, where she gained her PhD and developed an interest in health and safety management. Louise is currently in a full-time health and safety role within a large organisation and is a registered health and safety professional (GradIOSH, MISTR). She volunteers to teach martial arts in her spare time and works with martial arts students of all ages.

Ian Cottam

Ian was appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2020, and is a digital specialist. He recently retired after some 48 years working mainly in academia (much of it with The University of Manchester), but also industry, as a software engineer and technical manager. He also spent some time at Manchester’s Business School (now the Alliance Manchester Business School) working on change management and business process re-engineering with local authorities, such as Salford and Coventry. Ian is a Chartered IT Practitioner (CITP, MBCS) via the British Computer Society, and holds a master’s degree in computation. This is Ian’s first experience of trustee work, although he has acted as an IT advisor to Diversity Matters North West, and still does from time to time.

Janet Davies

Janet joined Emmaus Salford when the charity was first established and has served on the Board of Trustees ever since. Janet has undertaken a wide range of voluntary work over many decades, much of which has been with vulnerable adults and with the homeless in and around Manchester. In particular Janet worked one night a week over a period of eight years on projects with those who were homeless/rough sleepers in Manchester. Janet has also worked in schools with vulnerable children and for 13 years was a senior mentor to vulnerable high school students with specific emotional and social problems. Janet is a key link between Emmaus Salford and other local charities and groups.

Hilary Dunn (Chair of Trustees)

Hilary is a retired solicitor and retired Deputy District Judge in the County Court. Hilary’s focus throughout her career has been in all aspects of family work and child-related proceedings. Until retirement, Hilary was one of two Managing Partners at Fieldings Porter with particular responsibility for managing staff and implementing budgets. Hilary joined Emmaus Salford as a trustee as it was formed and continues to support the Board of Trustees with legal advice.

Dr Marie Griffiths

Marie is a Reader of Digital Technologies at Salford Business School. She is also the Post Graduate Director and recent ex-President of UKAIS (UK Academy in Information System),  programme leader for MSc Digital Business and MSc Managing Innovation and Information Technologies, and has teaching commitments within these areas. Marie has significant practical experience gained working on varied digital ‘live’ research projects, which have explored the commercial and societal implications of technological change. Marie also researches identity, ethics, privacy and surveillance technologies in these areas. This led to authoring a recently published book, Digital Strategic Transformation: a results driven approach that focused on digitally transforming SMEs. Marie is a big Manchester City fan and enjoys running and playing netball. She is married, has two sons and three dogs.

Erin Portsmouth (Secretary)

Erin is a chartered public relations practitioner who started her career in private sector marketing and communications consultancies, but for the past 13 years has worked in the National Health Service. She is currently Director of Corporate Affairs at NHS Greater Manchester Integrated Care where she oversees a portfolio across Oldham including governance, equality and diversity, public affairs, human resources, organisational development and legal. She has a Masters degree in public relations, is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR), and served on the CIPR North West Group Committee as a volunteer for ten years, also holding a three year term as Chair. She was appointed to the Board of Trustees as a volunteer Trustee and Company Director of Emmaus Salford in 2017, and as of May 2022 was elected to an unpaid Non-Executive Director position at Oldham Community Leisure.

 

Marc Stanton

Marc Stanton joined the board of trustees in 2022. Salford based Marc holds a degree in business management gained at Manchester Metropolitan university and is currently employed in a senior role within the Security industry, leading a division owned by a private equity backed company. Marc is an avid Evertonian and father of one.
