Emmaus Preston has been chosen by the new Mayor of Preston, David Borrow, as one of his nominated charities of the year for 2019/20.

Councillor Borrow was officially installed as the new Mayor of Preston on Wednesday 15 May at a ceremony held in Preston Town Hall. The Mayor of Preston acts as the city’s first citizen, which means they speak on behalf of the city and are an important part of its identity. They also represent local people at civic and ceremonial events.

Mayor of Preston, Councillor David Borrow, said: “I am pleased to make Emmaus one of my nominated charities as Mayor. They have a fantastic record of helping homeless people rebuild their lives. Finding somewhere to live is only a start and Emmaus do so much more.”

Karen Wallis, Deputy Support Worker at Emmaus Preston, attended the inauguration, along with Emmaus Preston trustee Roy Leeming. Karen said:

“At the ceremony the new Mayor gave a really moving speech about his desire to help those people marginalised in society. As a charity it means everything to us that Emmaus Preston has been chosen by the Mayor and we’re very grateful for his support.”

Emmaus Preston supports formerly homeless people by providing a home and meaningful work in a community setting. The charity operates three large social enterprises in the city, providing valuable work opportunities whilst generating an income to help sustain the support offered by Emmaus Preston.

Stephen Buchanan, Director of Emmaus Preston, said: “Our community is extremely honoured to have been chosen by the new Mayor of Preston as one of his four chosen charities. We look forward to working with the Mayor over the coming year and continuing to assist people out of homelessness, helping them to move forwards positively with their lives.”

In addition to Emmaus Preston, the Mayor will support cancer charity Rosemere, veterans charity Dig in and a charity in Malawi which support orphans, Friends of Mulange Orphans.
