Amazon Leyland invited people supported by Emmaus Preston to the delivery station for a series of tours and workshops.
This included a session on interview preparations, a session of mock interviews and a number of tours giving an insight into the work done by the team at Amazon in Leyland.
People who have been homeless or socially isolated receive training and work opportunities as part of the package of long-term support provided by Emmaus Preston. The charity also provides accommodation and help to overcome any issues which may have been experienced in the past. Companions, as people are known at Emmaus, gain work experience in a variety of different roles, involving the reuse of donated household goods that are passed on in the charity’s shops around the city.
Emmaus companion Sam said: “The tour around Amazon’s depot was a really good experience. I liked the explanation about the night work and how unloading takes place. I liked the four days of work and three days off shift pattern. I’m definitely more interested in careers at Amazon after looking round.
“It was good to learn that when you work with Amazon you have the chance to move up, so you may start as a picker then go on to become a supervisor. You move can upwards and make it a career.
“The mock interview training will be awesome. I always feel like I’m never ready for interviews and I’m always really nervous. They will be a confidence boost and valuable when it comes to looking for a career.”
Karen Wallis, Deputy Chief Executive at Emmaus Preston, added: “We had a brilliant time visiting Amazon in Leyland to find out more about what the company does and develop the interview skills of the people Emmaus helps. The team were so welcoming and we’re very grateful for Amazon’s continued support.”
Ryan Moulding, Senior Delivery Station Manager at Amazon in Leyland, said: “It was a pleasure to have the team from Emmaus Preston on site and provide an insight into day-to-day life here at Amazon in Leyland. We are proud to be supporting this great charity that supports people in our community and look forward to continuing our developing relationship with the Emmaus Preston team.”
