Here at Emmaus Oxford, we are calling on local people to support the sustainable alternative to Black Friday and instead use their spending power to have a positive impact on Buy Nothing New Day (27 November).
Buy Nothing New Day aims to raise awareness of consumerism and encourage customers to shop more ethically. Organised by the Reuse Network, this year’s campaign aims to also spread the word that charity retailers need public support more than ever this year in light of the ongoing pandemic.
We sell a wide-range of good quality pre-loved items, including furniture, homeware, clothing and accessories and we are selling even more items on eBay, Depop and through our click and collect service on Facebook.
The funds generated from selling donated items helps us to provide accommodation, work, mentoring and daily support for people who have experienced homelessness.
Lockdown closures have seen us lose vital income from our Barns Road store. We really hope that local people will show their support for Buy Nothing New Day by browsing our eBay and Depop stores and click and collect service this Black Friday, or any other day, instead of buying new.
Second-hand doesn’t mean second-best. We only sell items in good condition and hundreds of brands find their way to us too, as well as quirky, vintage and retro items. This makes our shops, when they reopen on Wednesday 2 December, and our eBay store perfect for finding hidden gems. Each purchase makes a meaningful difference to others as well.
