Our volunteer Matty sat down for a quick chat about his time with Emmaus North Staffs…

“I’ve been volunteering here for about three years, and I do enjoy it. I first heard about Emmaus North Staffs through Facebook. They said they were looking for local people to volunteer, and I then got referred by the Job Centre.

I was looking for something to keep me busy and to improve my CV, and it fitted the bill nicely.

I’m here every week Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm. Every day is different: I get involved in all sorts of things. Sometimes I join the crew on the van, assisting with delivering and collecting furniture in our local area. I also help out in the warehouse, where we store donated items before they go out for sale in our Furniture Mine store. Sometimes I’m also to be found on the shop floor, helping to serve customers and making sure they find what they are looking for.

My favourite thing about volunteering here is definitely being able to see customers’ faces when we deliver furniture – there have been some really happy moments.

Volunteering at Emmaus North Staffs has given me many new skills. In particular, I’m now much more confident when I’m talking to people.

If someone was considering volunteering here, then I’d tell them to come and try it. It’s helped me because I used to be very nervous. I’ve added my volunteering experience to my CV, too.”
