At Emmaus North Staffs, we believe that no child should have to sleep on the floor or a broken mattress. That’s why we launched our Beds for Kids campaign in 2022—to provide brand-new beds, mattresses, and bedding to children in need across Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire.

We’re incredibly proud to share that in 2024 alone, we have delivered more than 400 complete bed bundles, worth around £80,000, to families in our local community. That’s 400 children now able to sleep soundly in a warm, safe, and comfortable bed of their own.

Addressing the Growing Need for Beds

Our campaign was born out of demand. Too many children in Stoke-on-Trent are without a proper place to sleep, and the need continues to rise. A report from national charity Barnardo’s suggests that up to 9,000 local children don’t have their own bed—a heartbreaking statistic that drives us to do even more.

To expand our impact, we partnered with national child bed poverty charity Zarach in late 2023. Zarach believes that proper sleep is essential for children to succeed in school and break the cycle of poverty. Working together, we now support all 92 primary and secondary schools in and around Stoke-on-Trent, ensuring children who need beds the most receive them.

A Community Effort

We couldn’t achieve this without the generosity of our supporters. The majority of the beds we’ve delivered this year have been made possible through our partnership with Zarach and Stoke-on-Trent City Council, and thanks to donations from local businesses and members of the public. Our charity megastore in Hanley, which is open six days a week, also plays a vital role in funding the campaign.

Each bed bundle costs £199, which covers the cost of a brand-new bed, mattress, and bedding, as well as delivery by our dedicated team of staff and volunteers. Thanks to fundraising efforts—including charity runs and community events—local businesses have also stepped up to support our mission.

How You Can Help

While we’re incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished, there’s still so much more to do. Too many children in our community are still without a bed of their own. If you’d like to support our Beds for Kids campaign, there are a few ways you can help:

  • Donate – Every contribution helps us provide more beds to children in need.
  • Shop with us – Proceeds from our megastore in Hanley go directly towards funding our campaigns.
