Tony recently became a companion at Emmaus North East after spending five years at Emmaus Bolton. He has recently moved into one of the rooms in our newly refurbished flats which connect to the main community building. These flats provide a more independent way of living.

After a few months sofa surfing I found myself on the streets. I spent five years at Emmaus Bolton, driving the van mainly, before making the decision to move to the North East to be closer to family. I moved to South Shields in December 2021.

One of the biggest differences, for me, has been the proximity to the sea. As a keen runner I have found that getting out for a run along the coast works wonders for my mental health.

Moving into the new flats

The move gives me a little more freedom. We can do our own cooking more. It makes it easier as I like to be up early so I can go for a run. It is a lot quieter and with myself and Michael living there. Ade has nicknamed it ‘the care home’. Michael and myself, both being older, get on well as we can laugh with one another without taking offence.
